A Watery World

Virgin Islands Search and Rescue, the all-volunteer organization that keeps BVI waters safe for boaters, is holding the annual 2017 Swim & Sup The Sound on Sunday, June 4th. At this fun event, swimmers and standup paddle boarders join together with family and friends for a day of competition, food, games and drink.

If you’re not on Virgin Gorda and want to join in the festivities, boats will depart from Sail Caribbean Divers at 6:45am and Trellis Bay at 8am. Another boat will ferry competitors from Leverick Bay to Saba Rock (race start location) at 8:30, 9, 9:30 and 10am.

The SUP race begins at 10am and the two and three-mile races get underway at 10:30am. Then at noon, the fun begins anew with Family Fun Day. The beachside event at Leverick Bay features a tasty BBQ, games and activities. Trophies will be awarded at 1:30pm.

Founded in 1988 VISAR has two dedicated 28’ hard bottom RIBs – one on Tortola and one in Virgin Gorda. Going into its 30th year, VISAR has carried out well over 1,300 search and rescue missions. In 2016 this impressive group launched its boats 82 times and spent 135 hours responding to marine emergencies.

Don’t miss this chance to join in the festivities and support a worthy cause. For more information go to visar.org/swim-sup-sound, call 494-4357 or email visarbvi@gmail.com.
