Regattas and new facilities on Virgin Gorda
2017 marks not only the third edition of the Rolex Swan Cup Caribbean held at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in North Sound, Virgin Gorda, but it is also the 50th anniversary of the yacht club’s founding in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. Organized by Rolex, Nautor’s Swan and YCCS, the Rolex Swan Cup will be held from the 1st to the 5th of March. Open to all Nautor Swan yachts, the first Swan Cup was held in Port Cervo in the early 1980s and the Mediterranean and Caribbean races are now held on alternate years.
There will be more anniversary festivities at the YCCS 50th Anniversary Regatta on March 7th. A permanent Challenge Trophy will be established for the fastest yacht “Round The Island” – in real time and corrected time. The event is open to all sailing yachts over 40 feet, and according to race organizers, will be a “festival of sail.”
The prestigious Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous will be held from March 10-13. Established in 2011, the regatta has become a favorite on the Caribbean superyacht calendar. Taking part each year is an impressive fleet of some of the world’s largest and most beautiful sail and motor yachts. Organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and Boat International Media, the regatta combines three days of first-rate racing in British Virgin Islands waters with a slate of exclusive social events hosted in and around the YCCS Marina and Clubhouse.
Post race activities will be held at the recently expanded Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Clubhouse and grounds. In addition to the top-class docking facilities for superyachts of up to 300 feet and the elegant YCCS Clubhouse Bar and Restaurant, there are now a host of newly completed facilities. Among these is the dockside Welcome Pavilion where guests will be greeted and provided with exclusive concierge service.
The new amenities include two guest suites offering stunning views over the North Sound; the Crew Bar and Restaurant where guests can relax, kick back and enjoy cool beers, the fresh cocktails and fine food; and an expert laundry service.
Behind the scenes improvements include a new pump out facility so that visiting yachts can help maintain the BVI’s pristine marine environment. This is just one of a number of sustainable initiatives YCCS is supporting as part of a drive to take a proactive role in conserving the BVI’s natural beauty and resources.
